At Gandhi Nidhi Chhatarpur, we empower young adults to express themselves and discover their inner voice through an immersive five-day Theatre Workshop. This program focuses on the rich tradition of Indian classical theatre, particularly the Nava-Rasa (nine emotions), helping participants differentiate between acting and reacting.
Exploring the Art of Theatre
Our Theatre Workshop is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of theatrical expression, emphasizing:
Nava-Rasa: Participants learn about the nine fundamental emotions—Shringara (love), Hasya (laughter), Karuna (compassion), Roudra (anger), Vira (courage), Bhayanaka (fear), Bibhatsa (disgust), Adbhuta (wonder), and Shanta (peace). These emotions are integral to Indian performing arts and serve as a foundation for effective storytelling. Acting vs. Reacting: The workshop encourages participants to explore the nuances of performance, focusing on intentional expression rather than mere reaction, fostering deeper emotional connections with their audience.
Hands-On Experience
The workshop culminates in a live performance where participants showcase a script written by alumni from previous years. This not only provides practical experience in acting but also builds confidence and teamwork among participants.
Aligning with Gandhian Values
Mahatma Gandhi believed in the transformative power of art and education as tools for personal and social change. Our Theatre Workshop reflects these ideals by encouraging self-expression, creativity, and collaboration among young adults. By engaging with traditional Indian theatre, participants gain insights into their cultural heritage while developing skills that promote empathy and understanding.
The Importance of Cultural Heritage
The study of Nava-Rasa and traditional theatre forms fosters a deeper appreciation for Indian culture and its artistic expressions. Through this workshop, we aim to cultivate a new generation of artists who can carry forward these rich traditions while addressing contemporary societal issues.
At Gandhi Nidhi Chhatarpur, our Theatre Workshop is dedicated to nurturing the next generation's creative talents while honouring Mahatma Gandhi's vision of self-expression and community engagement. By exploring the principles of Nava-Rasa and providing a platform for performance, we empower young adults to find their voices and contribute positively to society. Together, we can celebrate the beauty of Indian theatre while fostering a culture of understanding, compassion, and artistic expression.
